A children’s dental specialist like Dr. Thomas Bitner is a practitioner who, after becoming a general dentist, has completed an additional two years of post-doctoral training in the recognition and treatment of children’s dental and orthodontic problems. Specialty education includes child psychology, behavior guidance, preventative techniques, restorative dentistry, interceptive and comprehensive orthodontic care (braces), and the treatment of children with special needs.
what to expect
A thorough exam will be done to evaluate the heath of your child’s teeth, gums and mouth. We will evaluate your child’s growth and development and check to make sure your child’s oral development is on track. Our office will make child specific recommendations for the need of sealants, fluoride and other services based on your child’s individual needs and habits. Nitrous Oxide, “Laughing Gas,” is available.
Our pediatric dentist is trained to evaluate proper positioning of teeth and jaw structures, checking for the influence of any habits your child may have.
We strive to make each visit fun, educational, and memorable.
Your child will be introduced to the dental team that will be with your child for the visit. During the 1st dental visit we like to see parent and child together. Generally, during subsequent visits we will see your child alone. This allow us to establish a direct and close rapport with your child, thereby gaining confidence quickly. If you do come back with your child on subsequent visits you are asked to be the silent partner. Please do not be upset if your child cries. Children are often unsure of anything new and strange. Crying is the normal reaction to uncertainty. Depending on the need, x-rays may be taken to determine your child’s present dental condition. Dr. Bitner will examine the hard and soft tissues of the mouth, evaluate for orthodontic condition and perform a dental head and neck examination. The teeth will be cleaned and fluoride will be applied. Additional services will be scheduled for a later visit.
After your child’s examination has been completed, we will discuss the findings and give you an estimate of the cost of any needed treatment.
